QX0A6506THjag17Exercise TRIDENT JAGUAR 17 (TRJR17) Scripting Workshop took place from 30 January to 10 February 2017 at NATO Joint Warfare Centre (JWC), Stavanger, Norway, with participation from both Training Audiences, 1 (German/Netherlands) Corps (1GNC) and Rapid Reaction Corps-France (RRC-FR), as well as Maritime, Special Operations and Air Component Commands, the Joint Logistics Support Group (JLSG), theatre troops, short-term operational contractors and in-house JWC staff.

The workshop was the third and final step in the Main Events List/Main Incidents List (MEL/MIL) process and it was where the scripters developed the exercise by adding realistic detail to the broader story written during the Incident Development Workshop, which for TRJR17 took place in November 2016.

Simply put, any MEL/MIL Scripting Workshop is a challenge and it takes a not-insignificant sum of people from a number of functional areas to deliver a challenging exercise to a Training Audience. The Scripting Workshop for TRJR17 was particularly stimulating as there were two Training Audiences, each with a discrete plan, aspirations and Training Objectives. The main challenge to the scripters was to use as much commonality as possible while continuing to uniquely challenge both Commanders.

Another challenge is the scenario for each exercise: the TRIDENT Series encompasses JAGUAR, JAVELIN AND JUNCTURE exercises, each with its own scenario and associated political and operational challenges.

Many JWC staff and contractors are involved in all three TRIDENT exercises, so trying to avoid cross-contamination requires a very clear understanding of the environment, especially with two Training Audiences, as detailed above.

Overall, TRJR17 MEL/MIL Scripting Workshop was a resounding success. It was hard work but all the objectives were achieved. Both 1GNC and RRC-FR exercises will offer a broad range of operational dilemmas to their respective Commanders. As the JWC TRJR17 team, we are genuinely very excited at the prospect of delivering each to the respective Training Audiences --- with the completion of the Scripting Workshop we now have a superior product to take forward in to the Execution Phase.
