The Norwegian Minister of Defence, H.E. Ine Eriksen Søreide, visited NATO’s Joint Warfare Centre (JWC) on Tuesday, 31 May 2016.
Before her appointment as Defence Minister in 2013, Ms Søreide subsequently served as Chair, Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence, and Chair, Enlarged Foreign Affairs Committee.
On arrival to the JWC’s premises in Jåttå, Stavanger, H.E. Søreide was warmly welcomed by German Army Major General Reinhard Wolski, Commander JWC, and U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Roger Watkins, the Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff.
During her visit, Ms Søreide was accompanied by the Military Assistants, Lieutenant Colonel Terje Hanssen and Lieutenant Colonel Kai Morkestrand as well as the Ministry’s senior officers, Ms Marita Hundershagen and Lieutenant Colonel Gard Shanks Andersen.
Following a bilateral meeting with Major General Wolski, the Minister received a detailed mission briefing on JWC's current and future activities as the premier operational warfare and training centre of NATO.
The programme then continued with a guided tour of the JWC's state-of-the-art training facility led by British Army Colonel Stephen Williamson, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Centre’s Exercise, Training and Innovation Directorate, which included a visit to the Exercise Situation Centre (SITCEN) and the office and training areas, the exercise combat map room, the 600-seat auditorium as well as the fully equipped live broadcast studio where Ms Søreide was briefed on media simulation and training activities during JWC-led command post exercises.
During the visit, Ms Søreide also took the opportunity to meet with the Norwegian personnel working at the JWC.
Overall, the Norwegian Defence Minister’s visit provided an excellent opportunity for both sides to share insights and enhance common understanding between the Host Nation and the JWC, NATO’s footprint in Norway. During the discussions, Major General Wolski highlighted the strong relationship with Norway and underlined the excellent support extended to the Centre by the Host Nation since JWC’s inauguration in 2003.
An exclusive interview with the Minister will be published in the upcoming June 2016 issue of The Three Swords Magazine.
