NATO's Allied Joint Force Command Naples (JFC Naples), the headquarters which will lead the NATO Response Force (NRF) for 2017, and its Component Commands convened for a two-day workshop in Stavanger to exchange ideas and to develop the Main Event List/Main Incident List (MEL/MIL) for exercise TRIDENT JUNCTURE 16 (TRJE16).
Over 40 service members and civilians participated in the MEL/MIL Strategy Workshop from 12 to 13 April at the Joint Warfare Centre (JWC) in preparation for Exercise TRJE16, which is scheduled to take place this autumn.
In addition to NATO Command and Force Structure headquarters, liaison personnel from the Estonian and Lithuanian Ministries of Defence also attended the workshop exercise.
The aim of the workshop was to develop a number of Operational Dilemmas, which will challenge JFC Naples and other Training Audiences at the operational level. According to JWC's exercise planners, Operational Dilemmas pose challenges that will "test Training Audience's ability to react to and plan for incidents that unfold as the exercise progresses." As such, each Operational Dilemma is framed within the Exercise Objectives, the Training Objectives and the overall exercise design.
"TRJE16 Strategy Workshop was a success because of the participation of JFC Naples and the Component Commands," Canadian Army Lieutenant Colonel David Canavan, JWC's Chief MEL/MIL for exercise TRJE16 said, at the conclusion of the event.
NRF 17: Exercise TRIDENT JUNCTURE 16
TRJE16 is an Allied Command Transformation (ACT)-sponsored exercise that will train, exercise and evaluate JFC Naples' Command and Control (C2) of NRF 2017, together with the Joint Logistics Support Group (JLSG) and the Air, Land, Maritime and Special Operations Component Commands, including Allied Air Command (AIRCOM), Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC), Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO (STRIKFORNATO), and NATO Special Operations HQ (NSHQ), which all together make up the TRJE16's primary Training Audience (TA).
Additionally, within TRJE16's NATO Article 5 context, the exercise will also train the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) provided by the United Kingdom's 20th Armoured Infantry Brigade, which is one the Secondary TAs.
Overall, the "TRIDENT JUNCTURE" series provides NATO's exercise and training framework to prepare and certify NATO's two operational headquarters, JFC Naples and JFC Brunssum, to Command and Control NRF each year.
As NATO's principal Command Post Exercise/Computer Assisted Exercise (CPX/CAX) facilitator, during TRJE16 JWC will assume the duties of Officer Directing the Exercise (ODE).
